The Seduction of Addiction — Proverbs 7:6–13

I can picture Solomon, in our present day, looking through a window from his house and seeing a young man lacking Spiritual Wisdom and common knowledge. I can also say that this young man was me at one point in my life. I can picture him writing about me saying these words: “He wandered into a place of danger without recognizing that what appeared attractive to him was designed to destroy him.”

In Proverbs, the “crafty harlot” represents more than sexual temptation; she also illustrates any force that seduces people away from wisdom and into bondage.

In today’s world, sexual immorality, alcohol, drugs, and addictive behaviors often follow the same pattern.

All though at first they do not usually appear as chains. They arrive dressed as relief, excitement, acceptance, confidence, escape, or pleasure. They promise peace but produce slavery. They whisper that one drink, one pill, one hit, or one more indulgence will satisfy the emptiness, while quietly leading a person farther from freedom.

Like the woman described in Proverbs 7:6–13.

Addiction is:

  • Crafty. Hiding its true intentions behind appealing promises.
  • Loud. Constantly demanding attention and convincing a person to return.
  • Bold. Showing no shame in pursuing its victims.
  • Persistent. Waiting for moments of loneliness, stress, pain, disappointment, or curiosity.
  • Deceptive. Offering temporary pleasure while concealing lasting consequences.

The young man in Proverbs was not captured in a single moment; he drifted toward temptation one step at a time. Likewise, addiction often begins with a seemingly harmless choice before becoming a controlling force.

God’s wisdom calls believers to recognize temptation before it takes hold. The answer is not merely stronger willpower but walking in God’s wisdom, avoiding environments that invite compromise, seeking accountability, and trusting the Lord to satisfy the deepest needs of the heart.

The invitation of addiction says, “Come with me.”

The invitation of Christ says, “Follow Me, and you will find life.”

What I know and learn!

Every temptation that promises comfort apart from God should be examined carefully. What appears attractive on the surface may be leading toward spiritual, emotional, physical, and relational destruction. Wisdom recognizes the disguise before the trap is sprung.

A younger me, should have seen the ripple effects of the traps set by such temptations. A younger me should have listened to my elders when they were making their best efforts to guide me though the beginning of my life. But a younger me, just like many other young, and older versions of us chose to listen to those temptations and fall right into their traps.

Our Choices.

We all have a choice to make in life: to be the tempter or the tempted. We need to awaken from the nightmare of a spiritual war that many cannot see, yet its effects are felt every day. The objective of that battle is the same—to claim a lost soul.

The question is: Which side are you willing to follow?

The first step I took toward understanding this truth happened long ago. As I sought God, it seemed as if the forces of darkness worked even harder to pull me away from the purpose and life He intended for me. That struggle strengthened my conviction that faith is not merely about belief. It is about choosing, every day, to follow God’s path despite the opposition.

Above all.

No matter what, I am grateful for every person and every experience that came into my life because they helped shape who I am in Christ today. They also gave me the understanding and compassion to relate to others who have walked similar paths, allowing me to be the light Jesus Christ has called me to be in these dark times.

I do not condone or approve of sinful or harmful behavior. However, if you find yourself in that place, I know the One you can turn to. I can share how, through His unfailing love and amazing grace, Jesus Christ made a way for me when I could not find one on my own. He brought me out, transformed my life, and offers that same hope to anyone who calls on Him.

One thing I can confidently share with you is this:

If you are that young soul tempted and trapped, I leave you with this: Take the initiative to read and get closer to God. I recommend for you to read the Book of Proverbs “One Chapter” each day and also do this daily: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Matthew 7:7.

God Loves you, and He will not let go when you seek Him.
